Read Jeremiah 28:1 through 30:24
Maggie’s kids and grandkids knew not to call her on Sunday evenings. Although she could no longer attend church regularly, she would be in her recliner, Bible in her lap, watching her favorite preachers on TV. There was one new preacher, however, that Maggie just wasn’t sure about. He had passion. He had charisma. But there were some things he said that just didn’t quite line up with what Maggie read in the Bible.
Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent you, yet you have persuaded this nation to trust in lies” (Jeremiah 28:15).
Jeremiah recognized the false prophecy of Hananiah because he knew the truth of God’s Word. Hananiah was preaching peace and prosperity—something the nation of Israel desperately wanted to hear, but it did not reflect what God had already told them. Sometimes a good message is not necessarily God’s message.
God and His Word do not change. When we study and memorize God’s Word, it is easier for us to recognize those who preach something different.
Prayer Suggestion: Holy Spirit, help me to recognize those who teach a false gospel.
