Going through the Motions

Read Isaiah 1:1 through 4:6

“I’m sitting on the outside, but I’m standing on the inside,” said a preschooler whose mother had repeatedly told him to sit down. He had gone through the motions of obeying, but his attitude wasn’t right.

In Isaiah’s day, people rebelled against God with their attitudes even while they went through the motions of bringing sacrifices and praying. This disgusted God.

When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening (Isaiah 1:15).

Later Isaiah pinpointed the issue: They “come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (29:13). Like the preschooler, they did what looked correct on the outside, but their hearts were not truly responding to God.

Many people today simply go through the motions of worship, but their inward attitudes are far from pleasing to God. And God’s reaction to such empty worship is the same—disgust. He desires our sincere worship from a truly thankful heart.

Thought for Today: Do I need an “attitude adjustment”?

Quicklook: Isaiah 1:11–17
