Read 2 Samuel 1:1 through 3:5; Luke 11:37–54
“How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war have perished!” (2 Samuel 1:27).
David, a talented musician who composed many psalms, poured out his heart in this poem of lament. King Saul and Saul’s son Jonathan, David’s faithful and beloved friend, had perished in battle. The song of grief expressed David’s feelings about this tragic event.
Saul had sought to kill him, but David still honored Saul and refused to hate the king or to seek revenge. David instructed his hearers to conceal the news from Israel’s enemies, who would gloat over their triumph (verse 20). He considered Saul’s shield useless since it failed to protect him (verse 21). The mighty king and his son were together in death as they fought to preserve their nation (verse 23).
Like David, all humans grieve over losses—the death of loved ones, or wounds such as divorce, theft, and injury.
Christians, however, can take courage and find strength in Jesus.
Challenge for Today: Give your grief to God.
