Tax Cheaters

Read Judges 8:33 through 10:5; Luke 3:1–20

In Jesus’ day, the tax cheaters were the collectors. The practice was to collect more than the hated Romans required and keep the overage. Many collectors became very wealthy through extortion.

Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them (Luke 3:12–13).

Today the tables are turned. According to the Tax Foundation and Pew Research, almost two million people cheat on their taxes each year. An estimated $270 billion is lost to the US Treasury due to unreported income. In just a few weeks the US income tax returns will be due. Every Christian should live above reproach in all financial dealings, including taxes.

The New Testament makes it clear that Jesus paid His taxes. His people should too. God’s provisions are generous enough that, with good stewardship, honesty, and integrity, their testimonies will be enhanced by their attention to their taxes.

Thought for Today: People watch how you handle your money.

Quicklook: Luke 3:7–14
