How Much Is Enough?

Read Ecclesiastes 5:1 through 7:29

“One more dollar,” responded the wealthy John D. Rockefeller when asked, “How much is enough?”

The author of the Book of Ecclesiastes probably had more than that “one more dollar” and still knew wealth wasn’t the answer.

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 5:10).

The current culture says that money is the answer to all life’s problems. Need a new car? Here’s a good deal on a loan. Want to feel more attractive? In three easy installments a person can pay for a face-lift. It’s all about money and the desire for more in order to feel good.

But this attitude about money—and the need to get more of it—is not what God knows is best for people. Instead, we need to learn to be content with what we have, thank God for it, and live within our means. The apostle Paul echoes the writer of Ecclesiastes nicely when he wrote: “But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1Timothy 6:6).

Challenge for Today: Be content with what you have.

Quicklook: Ecclesiastes 5:10–17
